Over the past month, I’ve visited Preston Vineyards and Farms several times for produce, sketching, and of course, wine tasting. The property is situated in Sonoma County’s Dry Creek Valley and is a beautiful place to visit, especially in fall. The farm store is loaded with gourds, pumpkins, herbs, zucchini, and much more. Picnic tables are in abundance and make perfect places for lunch and a quick sketch.
Westerbeke Ranch is a hidden gem located a few miles west of the city of Sonoma. Used primarily for retreats and conferences, the property delights guests with its lush gardens and meandering paths amid native oaks. Of particular interest are the metal sculptures scattered across the property that were collected by owners Richard and Muriel Van Hoosear while traveling in Mexico and Spain.
I chose to sketch one of the many guest cottages nestled amongst towering oaks. Many thanks to the Westerbeke Ranch’s staff for inviting our Ready, Set, Sketch! group for the day.
A quick 20 minute sketch today while out with my sketch group “Ready, Set, Sketch!”
The Zazu Kitchen, located in the Barlow section of Sebastopol, CA., is an authentic farm to table restaurant. They grow much of their own produce and put together the menu after hunting through the gardens to see what’s ripe. A great place for lunch or dinner.
Vince Tofanelli and I walked his mother’s vineyard this morning while he told me wistful stories of growing up. Afterward I sat for a couple of hours sketching the property, located in Calistoga (north end of the Napa Valley ). The mustard was in full bloom and with the help of the warm sun the air smelled sweet.
With the help of December rains, mustard is in full bloom all across Sonoma County. After three years of putting off painting this scene, today I finally took the time to sketch it with my good friend Phil McDonel.
Last weekend, the Ready, Set Sketch! group toured the Dry Creek Valley by bike. It’s one of the most beautiful rides in Sonoma County. Resting on a hilltop along Chiquita road, I sketched an owl box standing high above the vineyard covered landscape.
Lambert Bridge crossing Dry Creek, located just outside of Healdsburg in the Dry Creek Valley.
Quivira Vineyards, a beautiful winery located on the far end of the Dry Creek Valley has both, arresting views and great wine. This sketch shows a nearby barn, neck deep in vineyards.
Sketch of downtown Windsor. I have yet to check out Patterson’s Pub but I’m sure the inside is worthy of a sketch and a pint.
My take on the massive tree stump at the entrance to Oak Hill Farm. I decided to approach this drawing with my brush and watercolor. I was hoping to show how huge this tree stump really was. The roots were sticking probably 20ft or more into the air at the base. The bottom half of the root system was buried in the ground, so the roots could have been 40ft across or more!
